Choosing the right size is not just about adding up the height of your current gear. To accurately calculate the height you need to buy, use this simple formula:
- Inventory Current Gear: List all your current rack-mountable gear and sum up their U heights.
- Account for Accessories (Crucial Step): Do not forget non-server hardware. A blank patch panel takes 1U. A horizontal cable organizer takes 1U or 2U. A sliding rack shelf takes up 1U.
- Plan for Airflow and Spacing: High-heat equipment often requires a 1U empty gap (filled with a vented blanking panel) directly above and below it to maintain healthy airflow.
